A Beautiful Thing

Matthew 26
10 But Jesus, aware of this, said to them, “Why do you trouble the woman? For she has done a beautiful thing to me.”

We are able to read about one of the most beautiful accounts of Jesus in Matthew 26. While at Bethany, a woman unexpectedly approaches Jesus with a very expensive jar of alabaster which is representative of her life and all that she is. With many onlookers, she pours the jar over His head and anoints him with this special ointment. A bunch of chatter arises amongst the disciples as they question why she would do such a thing and throw away something so valuable. Jesus saw her act of devotion entirely differently by telling them that she had done such a beautiful thing. It was a sign of this woman’s utmost surrender, trust, worship, and adoration for Our King as she would lay down everything she was worth in the world’s eyes in exchange for something much more. Jesus even goes on to say how this gesture will be remembered all throughout time as something that will be remembered as The Gospel is spread into the world.

As I was enduring a severe asthma attack and thoughts from the enemy during a recent mission trip to India, I couldn’t help think about the sacrifice that Jesus made for us and all that He endured so that we would live. There is not even any comparison to what I experienced vs. Jesus or even the woman with the alabaster jar.. but it made me wonder how much we are willing to sacrifice for the sake of the Gospel? As we see in the example of the alabaster jar, this woman entrusted Jesus with her entire livelihood, her pride before the people, and everything thereafter so that she could bring all honor and glory to God. I even felt Satan put thoughts into my mind by questioning if it was all worth it in the end (loss of purpose, FOMO fear of missing out, weeks of recovery and the delay of getting back to the norm, etc. etc. etc..).. and I found this wrestling with the Lord very real. What Jesus spoke to me after much processing is that not only am I blessed by just being there without having to do anything, but any act of surrender that goes beyond our own security, comfort or convenience for the sake of proclaiming that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior is a beautiful thing! Even though we might not be able to see it, feel it, or even realize it, the sacrifices that we are willing to lay down before the Lord always returns in spirit something much greater that will forever change our outlook, our appreciation, our hopes, and our faith.

Thank you Jesus for using the woman with the alabaster jar to even speak to generations beyond her sacrifice. Help me to constantly have Your attitude and mindset especially when it comes to the unexpected hardships, struggles, and injustices that can all be used for Your glory!
