Alex Cheng integrates problem-solving, technology and design with his expertise as a digital artist, designer, and storyteller. His initial passion for page layouts led to his breakthrough into the print industry. Incorporating imagery and typography, he built his foundation in 1998 by creating ads, brochures, posters, and flyers for the University of California, San Diego Bookstore. The notion of interactivity sparked his interest as he shifted his focus towards web design. Just a year later, he later worked as a Flash Developer for Nextleft Inc., previously one of San Diego’s most prominent web consulting agency.
In 2000, his ability to create highly dynamic web sites caught the attention of Darestep, a venture of Cap Gemini Ernst and Young in New York City. There, he had the opportunity to work with Fortune 500 companies that included Farmers Insurance, Lehman Brothers, and MyFamily MD. His desire to work in a smaller sized studio landed him back in LA where he teamed up with Netvolution, Inc. as a multimedia artist. They focused on delivering high-end services for the car aftermarket clients that include Borla Industries, Cobra Seats, and Sube Sports.
Alex later yearned for a conceptual understanding for his digital work. In 2001, he enrolled in the Media Design Program at the Art Center College of Design, one of the most prominent art schools in the world. There, he solidified his skills as an artist and also expanded into his passion for video and motion graphics.
Alex also served as the founder and creative director of Pixel-Conscious, a pro-bono online portal promoting new artists and inspiration within the media design world. His work has been presented at the Center of Research in Computing in the Arts at University of California San Diego. He has been interviewed by Digifad Magazine and is featured in Behind the Scenes with Digital Abstracts.
In 2003, he relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii and joined as partner and creative director of Entheos (now 9th Ave. Studio), a creative design studio which caters to clients such as AIG Hawaii, GCI Wireless, First Assembly of God, New Hope Oahu, and the Oahu Visitor’s Bureau. Alex later lead as an interactive designer and oversaw the online projects at Team-Vision, one of Hawaii’s leading advertising agencies and then at Jon Duarte Design Group as a senior designer. He also led creative design at TeamPraxis, where he was able to serve part time as their design creative lead, while opening up time for freelance projects and ministry with New Hope Diamond Head (now C4 Christ Centered Community Church).
In 2006, Alex founded and began operation of his own freelance business, instaMERSION studios, a media design powerhouse that offers high-end transmedia solutions for clients. His personal portfolio instamersion.com has gone through numerous design upgrades and has gained much recognition, engraving its name in the online community. As the owner of instaMERSION, Alex continues to bring excellence through video, web, print, and graphic design to penetrate the marketplace and make a Kingdom difference through the arts, but most of all through building bigger people.
Alex is passionate about helping organizations, teams, and people discover who God has called them to be. His faith in Jesus gives him a strong sense of purpose and plan. He was called to serve Taiwan, 2010-2013, as a full-time missionary to help plant a church while leading worship, bible studies, and doing various branding projects for churches. Upon returning to Honolulu in 2013, Alex worked as an Experience Designer upon his return on Hawaii with Anthology Marketing Group, the largest advertisement agency in Hawaii focusing on digital, public relations, and research practices.
Shortly after, the Lord called Alex to full-time ministry to pursue his calling to one day become a pastor. He currently works for C4 Christ Centered Community Church as their media director, supervising projects and a team of volunteers for video and presentation. Alex has a heart to use media and discipleship to bring others closer to Christ. Also as a Wealth Coach for Tardus Wealth Strategies, Alex helps many people figure out strategies and techniques to lead them out of debt and into financial freedom. He also currently serves on the board of directors at Hawaii Meals on Wheels.
Alex is a team leader, a motivator, and loves learning and mentoring others. He also enjoys film and being a foodie; while being physically active–weightlifting, surfing, hiking, exploring–; and finding other expressive outlets–playing guitar, blogging, and speaking Mandarin Chinese.
