What are You Thirsting for?
Psalm 421 As a deer pants for flowing streams, so pants my soul for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God for the living God. When shall I come and appear before God?
David has a deep inward agony has he presses into the Lord. As his soul is enduring so much torment, he likens the condition of his soul like a deer who from the challenges of mere survival desperately yearns for a drink of water.. for nourishment, comfort, and revival. Likewise David is fighting for a survival of his own while being pursued by King Saul and his men. What strikes me is that he is still able to keep the perspective of God in his discovery processing his emotions and situation.
There’s a huge difference between running away from a situation as an escape versus remaining still in the midst of hardship while seeking the Lord’s face. The former excuses ourselves from facing rough areas of our spirit whereas the latter though through long suffering changes and grows us to become more like Christ when we genuinely thirst for Him. When this deer is able to come and be nourished by the flowing streams, it’s enough for him to go back into the wild until the next time he needs to be re-nourished. We need to thirst after the Lord in the same way while expecting and realizing the hardships we are called to face in this world without surprise, shock, or offense to who God says we are. It’s by drinking from the well of living water where the Lord not only quenches our thirst but from the outpouring of the Holy Spirit we would never thirst again.
Thank you Father God, that I can come to you in my desperate times of need.. that Your spirit nourishes me especially in times of need. Help me realize the process and not be alarmed when my soul once again hungers and thirsts for you because of the spiritual battles we war in our today. Overflow in me so that I can continue to do Your good work with excellence and abundance as a worship to You.
