When Your Enemies Fall

2 Samuel 1:16
And David said to him, “Your blood be on your head, for your own mouth has testified against you, saying, ‘I have killed the Lord’s anointed.’”

After King David achieved a huge victory over the Amalekites, a man approaches him with the news of Saul and Jonathan’s death. The man explains the horrifying event of Saul taking his own life while this man finishes the task in the end. David and his men immediately enter a genuine time of mourning. David has another encounter with this man and questions why he didn’t tremble while being asked to kill God’s anointed. David accuses this man for carrying the responsibility of Saul’s death and orders for the execution of this man.

How do we react when we hear news of our enemies falling? King David had such a history of Saul pursuing him out of his own jealousy.. yet he never lays a finger upon him even though there were opportunities. I’m sure that David’s head was filled with evil thoughts of the things that he could have done to Saul because of the torment he had experienced. I recall someone who had teased me all throughout high school and a few years ago heard about a horrible divorce he had endured. Part of my mind was thinking, “It serve him right for picking on me all those year!” and at the same time a huge part of me mourned and felt sorry for him.. not only because of his divorce but because he has yet to know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. This morning I’m feeling God say that He wants us to have His heart for even those who have wronged us in the past, let go of past hurt, and release forgiveness so that they can receive the greatest gift of salvation this season. These challenges they may be enduring also present opportunities to reconnect, throw out a prayer, and shine the light of Jesus especially to those that need Him!

Lord Jesus forgive me for any evil thoughts against those who may have wronged me in the past. Help me realize that like the Roman soldiers their actions could be a result of them just not knowing any better. I release my former enemies to You in exchange of them becoming Your friend!
